Anti-androgenic effect of Lignans

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the potent, reduced form of the male hormone testosterone, plays a significant and complex role in human physiology. DHT is an androgen, one of the hormones responsible for the biology of gender – contributing to masculine characteristics such as facial hair and deepening of the voice. DHT is also associated to problems such hair loss and acne.

One way of combating the negative effects of DHT is to use products that can balance the production of androgens. This is where flax lignans come in. Lignans are potent anti-androgens and research has shown that they work in various ways in the human body:

The similarity in the chemical structure of mammalian lignans and estradiol explains why lignans exert estrogen–like (weakly estrogenic and anti-estrogenic) activities and mediate hormonal effects.
Clinical evaluation of LinumLife® has confirmed the role of lignans having a marked effect in the balancing of circulating hormone levels. In men, lignans are shown to have significant relief of both symptons and cause of BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) as well as hair loss due to AGA (androgenic alopaecia). In men and in women LinumLife® has shown to improve skin appearance.

Recent publications have shown positive effects of Lignans in metabolic syndrome (cardiovascular diseases and diabetes).
